About the Professors
John Freeman and John Kaplan are experienced not just as educators, but also as working professionals. Freeman was twice named College of Journalism and Communications Teacher of the Year and is a winner of the NPPA Durniak Mentoring Citation. Kaplan has also been named Teacher of the Year and has been awarded the Pulitzer Prize winner for Feature Photography.
John G. Freeman joined the faculty in 1991 and is a tenured Associate Professor of journalism. Previously, he was instructor and assistant professor in the Elliott School of Communication at Wichita State University in Kansas.

Freeman holds a bachelor of journalism degree with an emphasis in photojournalism from the University of Missouri School of Journalism (1975), and a master's in communications from Wichita State University (1987). The son of a career Air Force sergeant, Mr. Freeman graduated from Berlin American High School in Germany (1971).

His professional newspaper experience includes six years as a staff photographer at the largest newspaper in Kansas, The Wichita Eagle, and internships at the Arizona Republic in Phoenix in 1974, and The Palm Beach Post in Florida in 1975.

During summer 2002 he was awarded an ASNE Fellowship to work at the Bergen Country Record and in summer 1995, Freeman renewed his photographic skills at the Los Angeles Times/Orange County Edition. He was selected as "Summer Faculty Fellow" at National Geographic magazine during 1996, and worked in the Washington, D.C. offices for eight weeks.

He has been awarded the NPPA Mentoring Citation and was named NPPA Outstanding Eduator of the Year.

In 1992, John Kaplan's words and pictures project about the diverse lifestyles of 21-year-olds was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography. In 2003, he was honored with the Overseas Press Club Award for Feature Photography.

His second book, Photo Portfolio Success, has been called the best book on the topic by the former Director of Photography at National Geographic.

The exhibition, John Kaplan: Retrospective recently debuted at the ICPNA museum in Lima, Peru. His Four Nations exhibition has toured three continents.

In 1989, Kaplan was named National Newspaper Photographer of the Year in the annual Pictures of the Year (POY) contest. He has twice received awards by the Robert F. Kennedy Foundation and has been named a University of Florida Research Foundation Professor.

A tenured Professor of journalism, Kaplan teaches photography, design and international journalism. He joined the faculty in 1999.

Kaplan has twice been named a photography juror for the Pulitzer Prizes and is profiled in Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the World. Professor Kaplan is a frequent lecturer at photography and journalism workshops throughout the world and has also received national recognition for his poetry and writing.
