Design Curriculum
Undergraduates concentrating on publication design have flexibility in their selection of courses in the new Department of Journalism converged curriculum. Two core print design courses are offered, Design and Advanced Design. These classes are designed to help students build portfolios worthy of landing jobs in the rapidly growing field of desktop publishing. Many of our design students also take independent study with Professor Kaplan to further their individual goals.
Supplementing the two design courses currently offered, students have other options to further their design skills in other courses such as Applied Magazines and Magazine Management. In addition to the design and photography listings below, the college also offers web design courses.
All undergraduates in journalism also complete required core classes such as Reporting, Newspaper Editing, and Problems and Ethics of Journalism.
Our design program is content-oriented and, as students progress through their classes, they learn up-to-date techniques using Quark Xpress and Adobe Photoshop software. We also strongly stress internships. At least one is required.
Additional information about our design and photojournalism and design offerings is listed below. You may learn more about all of the courses offered by the journalism department at www.jou.ufl.edu. Our college admission requirements may be viewed at the same Web site.
We recommend that undergraduate designers and photojournalists try to take our introductory courses as early in their college careers as possible, as well as gain experience at professional publications. Our most successful students complete at least two internships and intend a career in the visual journalism field.
The University also requires that all students take a general education core of courses, many of which are completed during a student's freshman and sophomore years. If you are interested in applying, you will find lots of detailed information at the main University of Florida website, www.ufl.edu
